Why Am I Writing This Blog Post?

It is several years since I last wrote a blog article, and I am only doing it now because I have been asked to do so by my tutor on the digital marketing course that I’m doing.

The course is teaching me a lot! Particularly with regard to one of the main objectives when writing a blog, and that is—No Boring Writing!  Because of this I have redesigned my website to focus mainly upon my writing.

You see, I started writing blog posts in late 2010. The blog was named Beyond 1984, and in it I wrote mainly about the writing of George Orwell, and also the writing of others.

Why I Quit Blogging

What a waste of time it was! I realised only after seven years of posting that my readership had not increased for most of that time. I wrote a lot about George Orwell’s life and of his writing, and succeeded in producing exactly what Orwell hated the most, boring writing!

Reading back over the historical posts from my old blog posts in Beyond 1984, I find some of my writing excruciating. Not all of it. What I noticed is that when I introduce humour into the posts they become much more enjoyable to read. A lesson there that I wish I had learned earlier!

A New Perspective

To be perfectly honest with you (presuming that someone is actually reading this) in the intervening years of blog inactivity I have been working hard to become a published writer. You could say that I have served a belated and involuntary apprenticeship, and maybe that’s accurate, because I’ve been told that my writing has improved a lot in the last three or four years.

It is no coincidence then that I recently published my first book, and though it is early days (publication was on 30th March) sales are going reasonably well and I have had only positive feedback so far. So—If you were wondering about the image at the top of this post—it’s the front cover of my first published book.

It’s a children’s book, about sea creatures living in a fantastic region of the North Sea who are involved in a battle to save their wonderful and exotic environment from the damage being done by the land people, us! It’s illustrated by my very talented younger brother David, and is available for less than eight pounds in all good bookshops, on Amazon and other online outlets. And, when I get my IT act together, it’ll be available here on my website, too!
